What is a Server?

FAQ

A server is a device or program, (most people think of them as just being devices) that communicates and provides a service to other devices or programs, known as clients. For a simple example of this client-server relationship, consider a website: All the content from the site, such as the text, images, any applications, etc, are stored on a server. A client, such as a laptop or mobile phone, then communicates with the server to access the site.

Because they provide a service to multiple clients, servers are typically bigger, more powerful, and have more storage space than clients. When you host a website, you’re buying space on a server; depending a person or company’s needs, they could rent their own server.
